Joining Us

If you are interested in joining us (or simply curious to see us in our natural habitat) the first thing to do is probably to arrange a visit to our luxurious premises (see Visit Us).
We welcome visitors throughout our opening hours (see About Us), but it's best to come between about 11:00 and 14:30 as you'll meet more people.
To become a member you need to agree to the Shed's rules and to pay the subscription (see About Us) Once we have your details (and money) you can come and go as you please.
It's as simple as that.

Frequently asked questions on membership

  • Am I eligible?
We welcome men of all ages and backgrounds as members. Many current members are retired, from all sorts of careers. Some others are unable to work for various reasons.
  • How many members do you have?
That varies, and was impacted by the pandemic. But by September 2023 we were back to pre-pandemic numbers. Not everyone comes every day but there is a limited safe capacity in each of the buildings.
  • Is there a waiting list?
We try to avoid the need for that! It varies, but for most of 2023 we were able to accept new applications immediately.
  • What will it cost me?
To visit a few times - nothing! But to become a full member there is a subscription which helps to support our running costs (and acts as an incentive to turn up each week!). Members may pay annually, quarterly or monthly. The annual subscription is shown on the About Us page.
  • Do I have to come every week?
No! You can come as often as you like and stay as long as you like (within the opening hours of course).
  • Will I have to help with chores and shed projects?
Well, we always appreciate it when members get their hands dirty and it will help you meet others and get the most out of being part of this club. Working alongside others is of the key principles of the Men in Sheds movement. Occasionally a member simply sees something that needs doing and just does it. But no-one is forced to do anything.
  • What about fund-raising, markets and the like?
We do sometimes attend local fairs and occasionally have a stall on the Oswestry street market. We appreciate any members coming along to talk to visitors, sell goods or run games to support our finances, or simply to support each other. Nobody is pressured to join in although without volunteers we would not be able to accept these opportunities. We may undertake work within the community and charge for the service to support our funds. There are some examples of such activities on our Facebook page (one speciality is mud kitchens!).
  • Can I make things to sell myself?
No, you may do any personal project but our constitution forbids the use of our facilities for commercial purposes. If you use the Shed's materials you should make an appropriate contribution to cover the costs.
  • Is that all?
Well - that's all we can think of but please feel free to ask another and maybe we'll add the answer here!
